I haven’t looked at PC’s in quite a wile as a Chrome does all I need these days. My son is interested in a gaming PC, does Oppo have any entry level opinions?

Do you want to buy one, or build one? Also, what games, what resolutions? And what’s entry price for you?

I’d recommend building (though you can get a lot of value by buying a refurbished business workstation and sticking in a modern graphics card).

In any event, to provide any sort of useful advice, it would be helpful to know:

budget?

what sort of games does he expect to play?

how old is your son?

Sounds like a great way to teach him how to build a PC.  Ryzens have been impressive, and you ought to be able to put together a 1st or 2nd gen ryzen build for a pretty good price these days that will be more than enough for an entry-level gaming PC.  Something like an RX580/590 ought to be out there for a song now.

Sadly, nothing’s simple anymore. You can get a “gaming” capable laptop for $5 00 to $5 000 and I wouldn’t recommend anything from either end of that spectrum.

Low end, good value option for middle school student looking to explore online gaming? $650 l ap top

Middle of the road, good value option for middle or high school gamer? $1000 desktop

High end , good value option for high school/college level serious gamer ? $2000 laptop

Full disclosure - I own at least one of each of the above and my household is fairly student gaming intensive.

In general, you can’t go far wrong with looking over the reviews on Amazon or Newegg, even if you buy somewhere else. (Just don’t buy from Best Buy or related retail big box stores as you will typically overpay). You will save ~30% if you build a system yourself, but it’s not a simple process to maximize the performance of a custom build, so if you aren’t comfortable with the insides of modern computers, I’d avoid the custom build.

tl:dr Amazon and Newegg are your good sources for reviews and advice on gaming computers, just pick your price point and get the best performing system you can afford.

Does it have to be a PC? Honestly, Xbox one X will play all the games you throw at it for the price of a decent video card.

I have a decent desktop from a few years ago and I couldn’t plant the new COD, so I bought the Xbox One X and it works perfect on my new tv. I’m tired of upgrading cards to play the latest games.

You can buy an Xbox and a school laptop for less  than a decent gaming laptop.

Gaming is marginally better if it’s not just lights. Otherwise normal products are good. Mid range cards and chips are just fine and long lasting. AMD has the value proposition now. You don’t need more than 8 gigs really and can add more later if 16 is actually useful for some future reason. Otherwise, you can do well with 600watts of power and mid level stuff for a long time. 1080 is all you really need. More is exponential money. And big graphics aren't useful in e sports titles.

That’s that’s $650 laptop only has an Intel graphics card. Not really gaming ready. I wouldn’t go anything less than a GeForce 1660 something in the $9 00 to $1,200 range.

thanks all, this was the information I’ve been looking for without the internet bloat. Sounds like everyone is on the same page.
